Academic Writing and Literary Analysis 

Strengthen your writing and analytical abilities with our course for High School. This program dives deeper into advanced essay writing, thesis development, and sophisticated literary analysis. Students will learn to examine themes, symbolism, and author intent while crafting persuasive arguments in their writing. Join us to prepare for upper-level coursework and future academic success.

Grade 9 Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop knowledge and skills in academic writing in accordance with Ontario Curriculum expectations

  • Generate, organize, and develop ideas using appropriate writing forms and structures

  • Write for a variety of purposes and audiences, using formal and academic language

  • Produce clear and coherent paragraphs, essays, and text-based responses

  • Use reading strategies to analyze literary and informational texts in order to support written ideas

  • Apply critical thinking and inquiry skills to communicate opinions and interpretations effectively

  • Use the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) to improve clarity and accuracy

  • Demonstrate command of language conventions, including grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure

  • Use feedback and reflection to strengthen writing skills and support ongoing improvement

  • Build confidence and independence as academic writers in preparation for secondary school success

Grade 10 course Learning Outcomes:

  • Extend and refine academic writing skills in accordance with School Curriculum expectations

  • Develop and sustain clear, well-organized arguments supported by relevant evidence from texts

  • Write a variety of academic and formal texts, including literary essays, opinion pieces, and analytical responses

  • Analyze literary, informational, and media texts to support interpretations and written arguments

  • Use critical literacy and inquiry skills to examine ideas, themes, perspectives, and author’s purpose

  • Apply the writing process to revise for clarity, coherence, voice, and effectiveness

  • Demonstrate increased control of language conventions, including complex sentence structures, precise vocabulary, and formal tone

  • Integrate textual evidence effectively using quotations and paraphrasing

  • Use feedback, peer review, and self-reflection to improve writing quality

  • Strengthen independence and confidence as writers in preparation for senior secondary English courses

Grade 11 Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop advanced academic writing skills in accordance with Grade 11 School Curriculum expectations

  • Write clear, coherent, and well-structured analytical and argumentative texts

  • Develop and defend thesis statements using well-selected and relevant textual evidence

  • Analyze complex literary, informational, and media texts, focusing on theme, structure, and author’s purpose

  • Apply critical and creative thinking processes to explore ideas, perspectives, and social contexts

  • Integrate quotations, paraphrasing, and citations accurately and ethically

  • Use the writing process to refine organization, style, tone, and voice

  • Demonstrate strong control of language conventions, including syntax, diction, and academic vocabulary

  • Use research and inquiry skills to support written arguments and independent writing tasks

  • Engage in self-assessment, peer feedback, and reflection to strengthen writing effectiveness

  • Prepare for the demands of Grade 12 English and postsecondary academic writing
